Description

The  Amerikansky russky viestnik (American Rusyn Messenger) was the oldest and longest-lasting newspaper for Rusyn immigrants in the United States. It was published by the Greek Catholic Union fraternal society from 1892 to 1952, and during most of the period covered in this volume it appeared three times weekly with a print run of 40,000 copies. This is the second volume of a thematic guide covering the years 1915 through 1929.

This volume covers the period in which Rusyn immigrants played a decisive role in the political fate of their European homeland and at a time when Rusyn-American life flourished before the great “celibacy” controversy and divisions.

The Guide to the Amerikansky russky viestnik, Volume II, features:

  • 6,124 entries indicating the title of the ARV article (in the original Rusyn and English translation) followed by a brief content description
  • entries organized according to the following topics: ARV polemics with rival publications and organizations; the Greek Catholic Union; religious life in Rusyn communities; Rusyn immigration; immigrant’s views of the European homeland; Rusyn culture in America
  • appearances with lists of all officers of the Greek Catholic Union (1915-1932) and its annual membership data and financial reports
  • introduction by Edward Kasinec, Chief of the Slavic and Baltic Division, New York Public Library
  • comprehensive 80-page index with references to individuals, organizations, events, Rusyn communities, etc. – a veritable goldmine of information for anyone interested in family genealogy and in the history of specific Rusyn-American communities.
