himself, “I am from nowhere.” The subject of this book is the remarkable yet virtually
unknown body of art that has seemed to come to us from out of nowhere. That
nowhere, however, actually is somewhere—a historic region in the geographical heart of
Europe known as Carpathian Rus’.

Out of Nowhere: The Art of Carpathian Rus’ is the first comprehensive survey of
secular art in the region from 1800 to the present. It includes a chronological survey of
secular painting and sculpture produced by over 60 artists from the Habsburg Empire,interwar Czechoslovakia, Communist Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Ukraine, and post-
Soviet Central Europe.

Each chapter begins with a historical introduction that providesthe political and cultural context then follows with a biographical sketch of each artist
accompanied by an analysis and illustrations of their major works.
Prominent artists include the masterworks of Hungary’s “most famous painter”
Mihály Munkácsy, the flowering of artistic creativity among Iosyf Bokshai, Adalbert
Erdeli, and Fedor Manailo in the Transcarpathian School of Art, and the transgressive
creativity of Volodymyr Mykyta, Nikifor, and Jerzy Nowosielski.
